Friday, March 11: The Start Of Astronomy

Astronomy Picture of the Day: March 11

Today during class Ms. D. told us that most people did really badly on the little “What you know about astronomy” quiz, we have to start at the very beginning. Then Ms. D. gave us our debate grades back, and then we went back to astronomy. First Ms. D. gave us our homework.

Homework list:

1. 1.Moon- remember to put the direction of the moon and a picture or description about how the moon looks.

2. 2.The APOD (Astronomy Picture of the Day) –remember that you need to explain the science of the picture that you chose. You can choose pictures from August- December of 2010 and January-March of 2011. After you have chosen a picture and explained the science, you need to tell Ms. D. why you chose that picture (min 3 sentences). After you have done that, email Ms. D. at dani.dipietro@aisz.hr. This is due every Tuesday at 8 am

After we talked about the homework, we watched a video called Power of 10. Power of 10 talks about the size of the universe. The video showed us how big and small the universe is.

Did you know: If we traveled 10,000 light years away from earth, we will not be able to see the Milky Way galaxy; but if we travelled 100,000 light years away from earth, we will be able to the Milky Way galaxy.

  1. Hi Noam,
This is a pretty good post! I like your pictures, links, and detail. Some few things you could improve are adding more color (unless you were having trouble with it), having a caption for your last picture, check some capitalization, and check your numbers - you had 1. 1. and 2. 2. in the homework list. It would also be good to add a link to the specific 8th grade Moodle site, instead of just to Moodle. Other than that, your labels are correct, the title has the date in it, and all in all it's pretty good! Keep it up! :)

  2. Noam - Nice work on this post. You have tried to follow all of the requirements from the rubric, which I appreciate. You have good hyperlinks to Moodle, APOD and the Powers of Ten video. But I do think you could have explained what the video was showing/explaining astronomically speaking. Maybe you could have found another video to help explain what we saw or what the focus was. Great picture choice, although only one of them is captioned. Your spelling looks terrific. Grammar is okay, except where you do the "Did you know" section. I am not sure I understand what you are trying to say because the phrasing is confusing. I do think you could have used some bold to have important things stand out more in the post. The title is fine and your labels are okay. Overall, good improvement. Next time search a bit more for something to stretch the minds of the folks reading! ~Ms. D.

  3. Hi there Noam,
This is a nice post! You have good links, pictures and a good label and title. You could have added a link to Moodle that explained your homework better, since it was a bit confusing. Some of the organization in your post was weird, since you mentioned that you got your debate grades back, then the homework, but never went back to the grades. Also, the sentence: "Then Ms. D. gave us our debate grades back, and then we went back to astronomy. First Ms. D. gave us our homework" doesn't make sense. You have good grammar and spelling. Also, when you wrote your numbers, they both didn't make sense (1.1, 2.2) and were out of the borders (That happens to me too). YOu should try to fix that with Ms.D. You also forgot to put colors! Overall, this is a great post, with areas for improvement.
