The First Scribe Post of the Quarter - Class on Thursday, January 27th, and Friday, January 28th

Hi everyone and welcome to the first blog post of the 3rd quarter!
Our requirements have changed a little bit, and the more detailed information can be found here. The main change is that we have to do less comments; only one per every two weeks! The next one is due on Friday, February 4th.

Thursday's class
On Thursday we immediately started working on our "Genetics Relationships" projects. We had a sheet with directions and a rubric. The project was mainly about defining words and then explaining how they are related with genetics and each other. The words we had to define were:
  • Deoxyribose sugar
  • Centromere
  • Recessive/Dominant allele
  • Proteins
  • Heredity
  • Genetics
  • Adenine
  • Thymine
  • Guanine
  • Cytosine
  • Nitrogen Bases
  • Genes
  • Alleles
  • Chromatin
  • Chromosome
  • Hybrid
  • Gregor Mendel
  • Homozygous
  • Heterozygous
  • Chromatids
  • DNA
  • Traits
  • Purebred
  • Fertilization
  • Double Helix
  • Phosphates
Almost everyone presented their project on Thursday;

Sophie, Noam and Ciprian:
Iva, Terez, and Vance (Iva missing):
Calvin, Bryce, and Antonia (Antonia missing):
and Gio and Reza (Reza missing):

Here is the song "It's Called Genetics" from "Bill Nye the Science Guy"'s show:

Our homework for Friday was to read pages 84-89, which was the section "Probability and Heredity".

Friday's Class
When we came to class, Val and Viktor (me) presented their "Genetics Relationships" project:
We started discussing Gregor Mendel (an Austrian monk who started studying heredity, and combined pea plants to get different combinations) and his work, and after that we discussed our homework and what "homo" and "hetero" mean. "Homo" means "the same" and "hetero" means "different". We also discussed people having three sex chromosomes, such as XXX or XXY. This often leads to Down Syndrome, which you can read more about here. Jamie Lee Curtis is a famous actress who has three sex chromosomes, as well as Lady GaGa. People who have this disorder are called hermaphrodites.
After that, we started talking about Punnett squares. Here is what a Punnett square looks like.

Then, we worked on the Bikini Bottom Genetics sheet that we got from Ms. D, which we have to finish for Tuesday (but only the front page!) If you want to, you can do the back page as well.

That's all we did these two days; remember to check the Science Moodle page for information about homework and other assignments.

The next scribe is Ciprian - good luck! :)

Vocabulary used in this scribe post:
Genetics: The scientific study of heredity.
Heredity: The passing of traits from parent to child.
Chromosomes: A combination of two identical chromatids and a centromere, holding DNA, found in the nucleus of the cell.
Sex chromosomes: The chromosomes "X" and "Y", used to determine your gender. Usually you have two sex chromosomes, XX if you're a girl, and XY if you're a boy. This is not the case if you are a hermaphrodite.
Punnett squares: Charts that show possible combinations of alleles passed on from parents.

  1. Great post,
with so much detail and very neat. I like the way you use font size and the color, different chapters with headlines and subtitles, nice positioning of pictures and hyperlinks excellent implementation in text. Nice, funny song about a serious topic! But, there are a few little things I would like you to change: in your very detailed title, you missed 3rd quarter. Also, not enough scientific hyperlinks of your choice about theme genetics, like you put for Down Syndrome. I would like to see the short definitions for the mentioned words, like you put for those five (genetics etc.).
The color of the font for the text under "Friday's class" is blue, just like the color of the hyperlink, so it's confusing and hard to spot hyperlinks. Overall, I think it is a good improvement since the first one and you are working at high standards.

  2. Hi Viktor,
This is a fantastic post to start of the quarter, and I think you did very well. First off, I would like to say that you had great pictures, and great hyperlinks. The video was entertaining and did match the subject, and you had good use of color. But one thing I might suggest, as David did, is that you should change the color of text from blue to a darker blue or something else because it was hard to see the hyperlinks. You also could maybe have used simpler definitions at the end when defining the vocab used in the post. After reading the definitions, I still had a hard time figuring out what Lady Gaga and Jamie Lee Curtis had three of. Also, at the beginning of the post, you listed words of what you had to define. It would be helpful for the people viewing if you listed the definitions along with the words. Overall, this post is amazing, and you did a very good job on it.

  3. Viktor,
You have started out the quarter of blogging very well. It was a good idea having a picture of everyone presenting their oresentation but it is a bit strange since yours is only represented by a screenshot and not a photo. You have incorperated links into your post very well. However teh blue text makes the links hard to distinguish. On that same note you did a very good job using color in your post, which is not something I think I have ever complemented on someone before, feel honored. It may have been a good idea to write the defintions of the words when you list them since everyone has already presented and it seems a bit strange having three of the words defined at the end but no other ones where. It was a great idea having vocabulary at the end though and I believe it is a first. Maybee more people will do it and you will have started something new this quarter. It is a very good post and a great way to start the quarter on this blog.

  4. Hi there Viktor,
This is a GREAT post! You were very thorough and I had fun reading your post. Not being a memeber of your class and not having attended Thursday's and Friday's classes, I still understood perfectly what was going on in class and what you did. As Nate and David already said, I think that you should change your colors, since it is a bit hard to see the hyperlinks. I found it friendly that you put good luck when you said that Cip was the next scribe post! You had many great pictures. They were great since they showed what you basically did in class, and the captions were fantastic. You had a lot of links, including moodle, which is very helpful. You also had great videos such as Bill Nie the Science Guy. I really liked that you put the words that you had to do the definitions for, but I think that you should have put the actual definitions too, since it was a bit confusing. I liked that you discussed different syndroms and problems that may occur at birth. Overall, amazing post, and I think that if anyone wants to know more about what you did in class, they should definitely contact you since yuo know exactly what you are supposed to. GREAT JOB!!!

  5. Viktor - Terrific work on the first post of the 3rd quarter. You have definitely followed all of the directions. The one area that could be slightly improved is your use of voice. It could be a bit more "exciting". You have excellent choices of links and all of the them are hyperlinked and work. I love the vocabulary explanation at the end, it really clarifies what we were discussing in class and the science we covered. Yahoo!! ~Ms. D.

  6. Hi Viktor,
I think that this post was good because you managed to describe what happened during class in detail. I liked that you put all the vocabulary on your post. I liked that your post included lots of color when you wrote your post. The other part of the post that you did pretty well was the science. I think that because the song was helpful. Your picture also helps because it is of a Punnett Square and it helps me remember how to find the alleles. I like that you put up pictures of every presentation. But I think there were somethings that you could have improved on your post. One thing you could have done to improve the science is defining the vocabulary words. Don't get me wrong I think its good that you put all the vocabulary. But I think it would have been even better to define all of them. I think that you did everything else very well. Good links, science, and pictures. You can improve it by going more in depth with the science. Overall I think you made everything great and you elaborated.

  7. Hey Viktor!
I really liked your post! To begin with, you had very many helpful links and pictures and you included all the vocabulary. Furthermore, I liked the fact that you included the definition of a Punnett square, but I think you could have expanded on it's relation to Genetics. I also liked the fact that you explained who Gregor Mendel is and what he studied. Overall, I really liked your post, and I think it is definitley a great start for our blog! Great job!

  8. Hi Viktor,
This post was a model for future posts, for anyone from seventh or eighth grade. This post from what I can remember, you followed all directions on the rubric. Also you did a great job of including hyper links and links, the video was also good, because: It was not too long so it was within my attention span and It was just interesting how Bill Nye conducts his videos. One thing I also noticed was you did not have a greatly varying amount of color and you could have included definitions for the words. But besides that your idea of including pictures in your post was amazing!

  9. Hey Viktor! Overall, this is an awesome post! I loved the pictures and the video link was cool too. I liked how you put the words we had to use and the words you used in your post. Another thing is the Punnett Square was nice. I have nothing negative to say excpet that maybe you should have defined the 'Genetics Relationships' words on top. Also, you described in detail about what we did in class so if anyone was gone, your post would be very helpful. ;)

  10. Hey Viktor,
I think your post is very accurate and well done. The layout was very organized, but you could have filled it a bit more, since the first part was mostly filled with pictures. I considered very useful the list of words that we had to cover with our presentation, the vocabulary definitions at the bottom, the hyper-links, the Moodle site, the Punnet Square's picture, and the pictures of each group presenting on Thursday. Although, you could have talked more about the projects about Genetics Relationships, why we did them and why we had to include all the words listed. Also, you could have explained more further Punnet Sqares, what they are needed for, how they are related to what we studied previously, how they work and maybe you could have also included an example of the problems we did in class. Other than this, I think this is an excellent scribe post.

  11. Hello Viktor,
That was a great post! I enjoyed reading it and I think that you added great detail! I think it was very good that you put the photos because it is the best way to describe the day! I think it would have been even nicer though if you had written the definitions of the words you had to find! I liked instead that you hyperlinked the place where you could find the information and I thought it was good you wrote how the directions had changed from last quarter, I also liked the fact that you added the song because it was very funny and broke the silence. I think it was a good post, but you could have been a bit more detailed on the evolving of the class and what you discovered through the presentations. I think it was nice that you added the definition of the difference between homo and hetero, but you could have explained more throughout what XXX and XXY meant, because it was very confusing for someone who hadn't attended that class! I thought it was nice you added the picture of the Punnett square, even thought you could have explained a bit more. I thought that the Lady Gaga point was a bit irrelevant, but it was extra information...which I never think is bad! :) I liked that you wrote the homework but you could have added the link! Overall GREAT post!

  12. Hey Victor!

Like I have expected of you have again one of the best Blogs. You have a lot of pictures (also the real ones of the class), you have hyperlinks and even a Youtube-video to everything you need. But the hyperlinks in the "Friday's Class"-part are very hard to see because they have almost the same colour. Now, the science-part was pretty good. There wasn't a lot of to say about because on Thursday we did everything in our groups and Friday was only a half-class. But you have described "homo" and "hetero" very well and even the words that you have used have their own definition-part. You have included the whole class (the XXX and XXY part too) and gave interesting facts. (Lady GaGa etc.)
So like I said in the beginning it was a really really good Blog.

  13. Hy Viktor!
I like your post. You have included everything we did in class and had good pictures, and links. I liked that you included all of the words we had to put in the poster/prezi. I also liked that you included the vocab. in the end of your post. The song was a little confusing and hard to understand for me. I think you did a good job.

  14. Hi Viktor! Wow, you did a fantastic job here! Your post was detailed, very colorful and had links and pictures. I also liked that you wrote what you need to do for homework, which is helpful for people who don't like moodle. The song (the video) was a little bit confusing and weird, but it still talked about your science class topic! You use interesting facts about Lady Gaga. Your explanation about genetics is also very good. So, you did a better job here, than on your last post! Great work!
