Science Class December 3/Stomata lab/ Respiration chp.

Today in class we finished up the stomata lab. To watch a video about stomata go here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlmgFYmbAUg . Stomata picture to the right. To recap this lab before I move on, the lab was about the number of stomata on a pansy and mum leaf. The purpose question was, "which plant leaf has more stomata the pansy or the mum?" Now to continue with the day we discussed question number 5 which was, "Why is there more stomata on the bottom of a leaf than there is on the top of the leaf?" We agreed that the answer was, "Because if more were on the top of the leaf then it would dry the plant out due to the fact that the direct sunlight would dehydrate the leafs. So more are on the bottom because indirect sunlight is better than direct."
After we discussed that we moved on to talk about transpiration. To sum it up it is the way a plant breathes and sweats. Picture down and to the left. Video is in the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4rzLhz4HHk . The things that move in and out of a plant are carbon dioxide(in), water(out/in), and oxygen(out). Then we talked about photosynthesis which is the process in which a plant uses carbon dioxide and the sun to make energy.
After we had finished talking about the lab we went on to talk about respiration, which is in the respiration chapter. The formula for this is C6H12O6=6CO2+6H2O+energy. If you would like a detailed discription of this process then read it in your book on pages 50 and 51. A video about respiration is in the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiT621PrrO0 .
We then did an experiment on respiration with yeast and sugar water. The lab took longer than was anticipated but was cool. The supplies for this lab were goggles, two test tubes, one funnel, one test tube rack, yeast, sugar, water, and a graduated cylinder. That was the lesson summary for today tune into the blog next when Terez writes it.

  1. Hi Calvin, first of all I would like to point out that Iva has already done her scribe post and you need to choose someone else. Some other things you could improve are checking your grammar (you had a few mistakes) and maybe trying to break up the post into different paragraphs. You also have to have the label "Scribe Post" included. It was great that you had good links and pictures, that you subscripted the numbers in the chemical formula, and that you included the supplies for the lab we did. You could have explained what happened with the yeast/sugar/water and the sugar/water, though. Other than that, this is an excellent post for your first time! Keep up the good work!

  2. Hey Calvin!
I'll start out with the good stuff. The plant picture was very well explanatory, and the youtube videos were helpful also. I like that you wrote the formula and also it was good how you explained the Problem 5. You need to add 'scribe post' to your labels by the way. Like Viktor said, it would have been better if you went into further explanation with the sugar/yeast/water. Maybe check the grammar also, I saw a few mistakes. I really liked this post though, good job, Calvin! :)

  3. Hi,
it's very easy to understand and follow your descriptions but you didn't have to put "...science class..." into your title because that is the name of the blog. Instead you should have put the name of the paragraphs by your choice as well as the name of the book. I like the photos as well as everything you made organized and neat. Only you forgot to put the explanations and the names under them. Everything about respiration you described perfectly but if you put the photos about it, that would be better. Some scientific web sites about stomata & respiration would help explain it better. And also you have a couple of small spelling mistakes. I really like the color of the font that you chose - my favorite. It's very interesting to read about. One day you will become a great scientist.
    Dave :-D

  4. Hi there Calvin - Not bad for your first post on a class blog. The first issue those is your labels. They should have your name, Scribe Post and the topic we covered, not "lab" and the date. It was great that you had three links; one on stomata that was quite clear; one on transpiration that explored a topic deeper than what we covered in class; and one on respiration that looked at the respiratory system and not cellular respiration. This last link was not what you wanted to include here as they are two different processes. Your font is a good size, readable and clear. But your paragraphs are hard to get through as they are too long and include too many different concepts. I think some things could have been explained with more depth - the lab and why it didn't work and the formula and information about cellular respiration - it was a main topic we studied. I can tell you put time and effort into this post and it's good for your first one ever. There is room for improvement and keep these things in mind in the future posts you make. ~Ms. D.

  5. Hey Calvin,
This is a great start! I liked your use of pictures and your different links. You forgot to link to Moodle, though! I liked that fact that you went over the stomata lab. Your font was big enough to see and not too colorful. I also liked that fact that your included the cellular respiration formula. Overall, this is a great very first scribe post.
