December 2nd Class

First off, in class we handed in our Plant Labs, and talked a little bit about the appropriate format and content of our plant lab write-ups, notebooks, and graphs. We then immediately continued our lab looking at the stomata on the back of plant leaves. Stomata (or stomatum singular) are holes on the back of leaves, which are opened and closed by guard cells (picture below).

We started the lab off on Tuesday by getting our Mum and Pansy plant leaves and painting their backs with nail polish, then removing it with clear tape and putting this transparent outline on a microscope slide. This part of the lab also came with a short re-introduction to how microscopes work (picture below) 1250.jpg
Our homework was to read pages 49 - 53 in our textbook, and take notes on respiration and fermentation, as well as our blog comment for Friday. This can be found in detail on Moodle. We also watched a photosynthesis song during class, which can be found here. The next scribe is Calvin.

  1. Hi Dan, this is a good post that covers everything we did in class on Thursday, but you could have added more detail and what the results of the lab were. For some reason the pictures didn't show up, but maybe that's just on my computer. I liked your use of hyperlinks but you could've had a picture of a mum plant or a pansy plant as well. You also could have mentioned that a Mum plant is an outdoor plant, but that the Pansy plant is an indoor plant as well as an outdoor plant. Other than that, your labels are correct but the post is a bit late. In general, this is a great post for your first time! Keep up the good work :)

  2. Decent post, it covers everything that we did in class but is very brief and has little detail. It was a good idea to say the singular form of stomata and link to the team plant lab document. However to add on to the post you could have quickly summarized what makes a good lab write to turn in: such as titles on data tables and graphs. It would have been a good idea to explain what the stomata do instead of just saying they are holes. (They let in carbon dioxide and let out oxygen and regulate the amount of water in the plant). Also like Viktor I could not see your images which probably add a lot to your post but you should re-insert them and preview it to make sure they work.

  3. Dan - I am in agreement with your two other commenters. This scribe post for your first is good, but rather brief. I like that you have links in the post itself and that makes it easy for the readers to visit them. You haven't really discussed what the focus of the stomata lab is or how it relates to the topics we are covering in class like photosynthesis. I am glad you tried to include pictures, but neither of them is visible at this point. Your font is a good size and easily readable, but I do think you could have "spiced up" your post somewhat. Be sure to read through the rubric of what is expected from these types of assignments. Not bad for the first time around. ~Ms. D.

  4. This is a good post for your first time, the labels are appropiate, and the links are cool and work fine. It's good you included the homework, but the post is short and brief, and not explaining much about the lab. You could have added colors, and you did add pictures, but they sadly don't work. This is mostly a good post over all, but it does need some changing.

  5. Hi Dan! Well, your post is ok, though i would make the color more interesting, and I think your post should be more detailed too. I like that you did the hyperlinks (most of the people dont hyperlink, when they are supposed to). And remember, what Ms.D says about: "USE THE SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE", which I know is hard to use, when you are not a proffesional scientist. And good pictures!!
So, don't worry, IT'S NOT SO BAD!!!!!!!

  6. Hey Dan, This post basically covers almost everything that we did during class. Something that you could improve is the information about the Stomata lab. You could have explained how the stomata looks a bit more. You explained the rest pretty well and also included our homework and you included the correct labels. Good first scribe post!

  7. Hi Dan
For s first post this is good. Like Viktor, the pictures did not show up on my computer. I liked how you used hyper links to Moodle and the link to the song we heard during class. You could have explained how the song is relevant to the topic we discuses in class. You could have explained a little more how the stomata lab worked, and why there are more stomata's on the bottom of the leaf than at the top.
    Over all nice job.

  8. Hey Dan!
Nice Post! Your paragraphs were easy to read and you explained perfectly what had happened. Though, I think that you could add some color, since like this it looks kind of gloomy. You could still have addad a bit of more information, since I didn't understand some parts. Your pictures didn't turn out, so I reccomend that you change that. You could have added some websites that explained what happened. You also could have made your post more interesting by adding some exclamation point and changing the font. You could have explained in more detail about the lab and what happened, since I wasn't there and didn't get some parts. I think your post is good for a first post, but it could be improved.

  9. Hi Dan,
I liked your post! I liked that you put some links like the moodle and the video site in your post. I also liked that you said everything briefly, but you could've put more detail on what you did. I also think you could've add some pictures to make it nice, you know there's a whole section on the picture thing (multimedia) on the grading sheet. I also think you should've add some color for the writing. Anyway nice post and keep it up!!!!

  10. Hi Dan!
Your post is only for those people that were on class. It's too short and looks like a reminder for the class not like a scientific text from what you would learn about. If you included some links from other web sites and some pictures of your choice, the other students would be able to learn more about stomata functions.
This is your first post and I hope it will be better next time.

  11. Hi Dan,
I like your blog post because it clearly explains what you and your classmates did in class. Next time you should make it longer and you should put visible pictures because I couldn't see the two pictures. I liked the fact that you put links, and a link to moodle so that the others may check their homework if they were absent that day.
    Great first post!

  12. Hi Dan!
Your post was good. I liked how you wrote the three different things we did in three different paragraphs with pictures in between. However the pictures didn't come up for me. You could also include a little more colors. Still I think it was a good post and easy to read.
