Class of Thursday 18, 2010

Hello everyone,
Here is the link to Moodle, to check homework:
http://zagreb.ceesa.net/course/view.php?id=189

Thursday in our science block we reviewed first of all the Periodic Table of Elements. We learned some symbols for some of the elements on the table because it would have shown up on our Quiz. After that we watched a few videos from Brainpop, (http://www.brainpop.com/) about cellular life, linked here:
  1. http://www.brainpop.com/science/cellularlifeandgenetics/cellstructures/preview.weml
  2. http://www.brainpop.com/science/cellularlifeandgenetics/activetransport/

  4. http://www.brainpop.com/science/cellularlifeandgenetics/photosynthesis/
  5. http://www.brainpop.com/science/cellularlifeandgenetics/plantgrowth/
After watching the videos, we reviewed pages 32- 37 in our book Science Explorer. Throughout the reading we reviewed the definitions of the following words:

  • Diffusion: main method by which small molecules move across the cell membrane.
  • Osmosis: diffusion of water molecules through a selectively permeable membrane.
  • Selectively permeable: some substances are able to pass through the membrane while others are not.
  • Passive transport: the movement of dissolved materials though a cell membrane without using NRG.
  • Active transport: the movement of materials though a cell membrane using cellular NRG.
  • Exocytosis: movement of proteins leaving the cell across cell membrane.
  • Endocytosis: movement of proteins coming into cell across cell membrane.
An example of diffusion.

Also, here is the link to the YouTube video about diffusion and osmosis we had to watch:

One more thing we reviewed for the Quiz is the Mrs Gren method:

Movement
Respiration
Sensitivity
-
Growth
Reproduction
Excretion
Nutrition

This was it for Thursday's class.
The next scribe is Fabi.

  1. Hi Gio, I think that this is a great post! It has great spelling and grammar and uses great colors! It was great that you had the link to Moodle, but it would have been even better if you had the link to the specific section of the page. Also, the BrainPop videos don't really help because a username and password is needed, and I don't know what the username and password is. When you wrote "Science Explorer" it should have been italicized, not in a different color. Also, you never actually mention what day the quiz is on which would be good to do in case someone was sick. Other than that, I liked your picture a lot and it was great that you had definitions of the vocabulary we learned in class. Great job for your first post!!!

  2. Hi Gio, while I was reading your post it was just like I was in 8th grade. You explained the main topic very clearly and understandably. Maybe you should add the main title for your post, such as Science Review because you reviewed all the time and after that you could add a few subtitles to make it easier to read.
You shouldn't have picked the green color for your font because the green and blue color don't go so well together. (Black would be perfect) You could add more links and pictures to the video by your own choice to learn more about the cellular life and the Periodic Table of Elements. You made your post very thorough and organized. Excellent post.
    Bye, Dave

  3. Hi Gio!
I really liked your scribe post! I like how many links you put in the there and the way your organised your post. I liked the picture about diffusion. I also thought the fact that you put in the definitions was super, but you could've given some more. Although I liked that you included the Brain Pop, I couldn't access it. So maybe next time check that your links work. Altogether, I really liked your blog post.

  4. Hey Gio!
I really liked how you described what you did in class because you gave a perfect review, and explained where to go in order to find the information. You said where to go to find the websites you visited in class, even though you should have said what they were about, since there was a password needed. I also liked that you gave the meaning of the words and that you showed the definitions of the words you had read about in the book, as well as giving the pages in the book, so that if someone had been sick they would have known exactly what to do. I also liked the picture you put as an example.
I think you could have put some more information on what you read in the book, meaning you could have given a small summary. Also, you could have said more about the quiz, for example what else was going to be on the quiz.
    Other than that great post!

  5. Gio - there are some great aspects in this scribe post and there are some places you could improve. You have labeled the post and titled the post specifically, which is perfect. You have also covered the scientific vocabulary we reviewed in class thoroughly and completely. You have some excellent links - Moodle and the YouTube video. But your links to BrainPop do not work - you need a password to watch the videos. You need more than one picture and the one you have could have been explained more clearly. Good use of color and the font size is fine. Overall, nice work! ~Ms. D.
