Class of February 8th, 2011

In class on Tuesday we finished checking the Punnett Square Practice and More Punnett Square Practice worksheets, then received our group schedules for science day on Thursday, February 10th.

After we looked the schedules over, we started work on the trait portion of science day, collecting information from the class on phenotypes for several different characteristics, then noting them down and writing them on the board.

Our homework, which can be found on Moodle, is to read pages 92-96 and 110-121. These pages are on the topic of mitosis and meiosis, and pedigrees and karyotypes of genetic disorders. We will be required to participate in class discussion on these.

The Genetics Test is on Thursday, February 17th, with a review session during class and lunch (if needed) on the 15th of February.
The test will cover the following:
DNA Structure and Parts
The DNA Extraction Lab
Our Genetics Presentations
Punnett Squares
Meiosis
Inherited Traits/Mutations
and Pedigrees and Karyotypes

  1. Dan - This post is too short and basic. You have some great links to the homework sheets and Tour of Basics, but you have explained nothing about the science we are doing in class - punnett squares or any of the vocabulary or dihybrid crosses. You have given a well written summary of the basics. I think you could have gone further about Science Day, as it is something important to the class. You have not listed the person to scribe next and part of your labels are too vague. The one picture you tried to incorporate is not working and you have not explained what a karyotype is to your readers. We haven't even really covered these yet, so it would have been a great addition to what you were writing if it worked. You know you had problems last time, so maybe you should have uploaded here at school to avoid that issue. Overall, an improvement, but I think you can go further and put in more effort. ~Ms. D.

  2. Hi Dan, this post quite a bit better than last quarter! You had good labels, a good title with the date in it, and good hyperlinks! You still have some things to improve, though; your picture didn't show up again, and you could have tried to include more than one. You could have had more color and added more detail about science and you don't have who the next scribe post. You should check spelling, because "we will be nothing them down" doesn't make sense. Other than that, it's a pretty good post with room for improvement! :)

  3. Hi Dan,

This post was a bit too short. You could of used more color and you your pictures didn't work! You also should check your spelling! As Viktor said, this is a much better post than last years, and you improved a lot in your use of science. Though, you should really add more information, since I didn't understand at all what you did in class. Its good that you said your homework. Without any color, your post looks really dull and a bit boring. You could have also made your post more interesting by using better language. Over all, this post is ok, but to be improved.

  4. Hi there Dan,
This post is ok. You had great links and good labels, but were way too short and brief. Since you didn't have any color, your post looks really dull and depressing. You also forgot to add pictures, and the one you put didn't show up! You should go ahead and talk to Ms.D about that, since you had problems with it last year too. You could have been a bit more thorough while talking both about Science Day, and when you talked about what you did in class. I barely understood what you were doing and what actually happened during class. You should check some of your grammar, but your spelling is great. You should definitely go in and change this post as soon as you can. As Ms.D said, I think that you could have put a bit more effort into this. Your links were great! They helped me understand what Punnett Squares are, and I feel more confident about them now. You also forgot to put who the next scribe was! Overall, this is a good post, but you could improve it.

  5. Hy Dan!
This is a good post. However I think you could have made some improvements. You could have used more colors and must include who is the next scribe. I liked how you included all the sheets about punnett squares that we did and that you talked about the Test on Tuesday. This is a good post.

  6. Hey Dan- I think your blog post was informative, and it did explain what we covered in class, but it was a bit vague! It was even confusing for me to read, and I was in the class. Your hyperlinks are great, and it was a neat idea how you wrote down all the things we needed to study for the Quest, but when you talked about our homework, which was reading, you included the words such as meiosis, and pedigrees and karyotypes, and we didn't really study them yet, so you could have, at least in parentheses, put the basic definitions down! You also could have written more about Science Day, because it was a big thing for he whole school, and it's too bad that your picture didn't work!

Overall, a bit too vague, but good anyways! :D

  7. Hi Dan,
I think that this post gives you good information about what we did in class. It is a bit too short and general. You could have included a picture that actually works and, better font colors. You did a good job on explaining what we had for homework. You did not cover the definitions of some words and all the information about science day. Next time you should try to add more information about the actual class and what we covered. Although you made a few mistakes in this post, I think it is a impprovement.
